DIVX disks that are burned are just VCD's (when done properly).

I don't think this is the case. VCD disks support MPEG-1, are most often 320x200 resolution, basically quality in the neighborhood of VHS, maybe even below.

There are other standards out there for disks encoded in MPEG-2, which adds features such as higher resolution, higher data rates (higher quality) variable bit rate, etc. DIVX is MPEG-4, and last time I checked, I didn't see any DVD players supporting it. (this was about 6 months ago or more, things might have changed).
