When I was 6 years old we used to catch fireflies, which in North Carolina were called lightning bugs, and when their lights blinked on pull them out fast and stick them on our ring fingers like glowing yellow gemstones.

The other thing we did was to catch a June bug, (I think June bugs don't exist in NY), and tie a thread to its hind leg and fly it around satisfyingly (they flew slowly and made a buzzing sound) until its leg broke off.

We were actually allowed to do that.
