Infineon to pump up memory production
Posted 3/11/2002 - 10:15PM, by Yaz
Infineon has inked agreements with Taiwanese memory manufacturers Winbond Electronics and Mosel Vitelic that will supply Infineon with 20,000 more silicon wafers each month. The deal, which increases Infineon's production capacity by about 20 percent, comes in the midst of rising memory prices after consumers enjoyed all-time low prices in 2001. At the time, prices for DRAM were less than one third of their production costs; it should be important to note that the prices in question are the ones paid to memory manufacturers, not the ones paid by end-users.
Infineon hopes this latest move will allow them to increase their market share from about 13 percent to 16 percent. As part of Infineon's agreement with Winbond, Winbond will have access to technology used to produce 0.11 micron chips (as opposed to their current 0.13 micron chips) in exchange for Infineon being the sole purchaser of those chips. Hopefully such agreements will result in lower prices from the quality memory manufacturer and help to lower prices for newer memory in general.

Micron is expected to report on March 21 after the close. I believe the consensus is for earnings of (0.07).
