Japan Mobile-Phone Shipments Fall for Eighth Month (Update1)

Tokyo, March 12 (Bloomberg) -- Mobile-phone shipments in Japan fell 28 percent in January compared with a year ago, declining for an eighth straight month as subscribers bought newer handset models less frequently, an industry group said.

Shipments totaled 3.3 million during the month, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association said. Mobile-phone shipments tracked by the industry association include cellular-phone handsets and models using a technology developed in Japan called Personal Handyphone Systems.

Japan's wireless market is reaching saturation with more than half the population using a mobile phone. The country's three largest mobile-phone operators added about 36 percent fewer subscribers in February, the seventh straight monthly decline. Operators should offer handsets with new features to attract consumers, analysts said.
