The other choices were Tualatin, Willamette and Palomino. I think Palomino would have won (which would make it 2nd year in a row for desktops). Palomino vs. Northwood, I think Intel wins. But the time frame is a bit strange.

I like my theory (surprise!) that they have Hammer lined up for the best CPU of 2002 (if AMD delivers), and in the meantime, they wanted to reward Intel for the best CPU (as of now). It would be strange if they gave the desktop award to AMD 3 years in the row.
