>> What people always seem to forget about economics is that an economy is made up of people <<

absolutely. and an economy should serve the people, not the other way around. right now we bow to the wishes of the economy. everything seems to revolve around the economy. that is a shame.

>> Democracies pose particular problems to economic policy making, in that voters tend to demand things that in the long run may be against their best interests. <<

certainly. one of the reasons we started down this path of free trade is because during the latter part of the 19th century citizens came to believe that politicians were catering to big business here at home and unjustifiably protecting them to drive up profits. that was a reasonable concern, and one of the reasons we began to move away from tariffs heading into the 20th century. only trouble is, we have done a total 180, and now everyone just can't get enough free trade. free trade uber alles. let's all bow to free trade. it even has a catchy sounding name. free--as in freedom--as in doesn't cost anything. well that is a myth.

free trade dogma has become the policy that now caters to big business. the domestic manufacturing companies are the sacrificial lambs while the large multinationals are the ones feasting at the table.
