Varian Semiconductor Retains Its Number One Market Share Position
Report Shows VSEA as the Leading Ion Implant Tool Supplier
GLOUCESTER, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 17, 2002--Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates, Inc. (NASDAQ: VSEA - news), today announced that the company has again achieved the number one ion implant tool supplier position, according to a report just released by Dataquest.

Varian Semiconductor led the ion implant industry with 36 percent overall market share on a unit basis, and 35 percent overall market share on a dollar basis in calendar 2001.

``Varian Semiconductor has continued to benefit from the single-wafer advantages of its VIISta platform, achieving the leadership status in market share of worldwide ion implant tool sales,'' remarked Richard A. Aurelio, Varian Semiconductor's chairman and chief executive officer. ``Clearly, our market share position reflects our customers' acceptance of the throughput advantages of single-wafer processing.''

Dean Freeman, principal analyst for Gartner Dataquest, said, ``Varian Semiconductor retained the leadership position in unit and dollar market share despite the downturn conditions in the semiconductor industry.'' Varian Semiconductor realized the leadership position in market share through the increased sales of its VIISta tools, which have higher selling prices reflecting the greater capability they deliver to customers for 300mm and 200mm applications.

``Our focus is developing innovative products to maximize our customers' return on investment,'' said Ernest Godshalk, Varian Semiconductor's president and chief operating officer. ``The Dataquest report clearly demonstrates that our leadership in technology and customer satisfaction results in the number one market share position.''
