how about answering my question? shall i repeat it? you were the one who rattled on incessantly about efficiency, and freedom. if free trade is all about efficiency and freedom then you shouldn't be against the idea of letting china build all our bombs for us. and in the name of freedom you shouldn't mind boeing selling cruise missiles to iraq. after all restricting boeing from selling missiles to foreign countries is not what free trade is all about, right? that is restricted trade. that is government interfering with trade. that is bigger government. less trade. you said all of that is bad.

i assume you won't have a problem with the united states importing most of our food as well. let's stop subsidies to farmers. by golly if they just aren't efficient we need to stop giving them...how did you put it...handouts? after all, wasting all that land mass to do mundane tasks which can be done much more efficiently by foreigners would be more efficient, right? if you don't believe in "handouts" for steel i assume you don't believe in handouts to keep farmers in business who just can't compete and are too cheap to upgrade to more efficient equipment?

let's be like free trading britain before the world wars. someone will come along and feed us if we get into a nasty war. i'm sure we can count on canada, mexico, or australia to send us some food.

just quit evading the issue and answer the question. let me do it for you. there are times when the national interest of a country takes precedence over "efficiencies" and bottom line economic numbers.

my only argument is that there are national interests aside from the obvious ones like defense & military technology, food, etc.
