Don't ignore the fact that there is a supply and demand factor influencing PE's also. It may or may not be significant - I don't really know. Some have made a convincing case that the bubble was caused by Greeny and the fed putting way too much liquidity in the system. I think you will find that since 9*11 they have been doing it again.

See previous post, but the data shows that we have a rolling average GDP growth rate in current dollars of 6.9%. I think your 3% figure is what was touted before we knew how to tackle inflation and before we knew about the long term effects of productivity on the economy.
