Duker - Re: "Intel announced it has produced memory chips in its labs containing 330 million transistors through manufacturing technology that will hit the mainstream next year. "

Intel is getting aggressive in their technology development AND their "Publid Disclosure" of their development process.

I believe they announced in November, 2000 that their 0.13 micron process was qualified, and production of actual products (Tualatin) began in May/June of 2001 - about a 6 or 7 month lead time.

With Intel publicly disclosing their 90 nM process milestone, they are indicating that the front end (raw silicon through Metal Layer 3) is in excellent shape.

Note that the SRAM vehicle probably only uses 3 metal layers for interconnect - and their complete process for all the logic circuits will require at least 6 layers of copper metallization.

One other important factor is their discussion of 300 MM wafers for the 90 nM process - with D1C available, and Fab 11X coming on stream late this year, Intel will have a lot of 90 nM production capacity available with those two wafer fabs.
