It is sponsored by the AWP (Associated Writing Programs)and meets annually in different cities around the country so that writers from all areas can attend.

To my knowledge no one is paid to speak. Since writing (and more notoriously, poetry) pays so little, the majority of American writers partly support themselves by teaching and the M.F.A. (Masters in Fine Arts) is fast becoming a standard degree in this profession.

Topics ranged from how to run a graduate program in writing, to Latino- and south Asian- American poetry,to creative nonfiction, to the influence of jazz on poetry, and the influence of the literary journal on contemporary writing.

Evening readings were given by Richard Ford (recipient of the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Literature), Rita Dove (professor of English at the University of Virginia, former Poet Laureate of the United States, and the 1987 Pulitzer prize Winner in poetry), Ellen Bryant Voight (Vermont State poet, NEA award winner, published poet and fiction writer). There were many fiction and nonfiction writers, as well as poets, whose names the public would be familiar with, attending, as well as speaking at, the conference.
