We import more than 20% of our iron ore and that figure is increasing rapidly. Why? It's cheaper than mining it here. Exactly the same reason people import foreign steel.

It is senseless to protect the mills without protecting the supplies. But that won't happen because the steel companies will make the EXACT OPPOSITE ARGUMENT to the politicians that they will be hurt if they can't buy their raw materials at the best price.
