KPN Telecom Selects Lucent Technologies to Upgrade ATM Network
HANNOVER, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 12, 2002--KPN Telecom, the leading Dutch operator, has selected Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU - news) to upgrade its ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) network with Lucent multiservice equipment and services.

KPN Telecom's nationwide network is used for Flexistream, KPN Telecom's ATM transport service enabling Native ATM, Circuit Emulation and LAN interconnect transport, and includes Lucent's industry-leading GX-550® and CBX-500® Multi-Service switches.

Besides providing the capacity to transport more traffic on a single ATM network, this upgrade will enable KPN Telecom to support new broadband services. This offers savings on operational costs and network management. Implementation and integration of the systems will commence at the end of March and is expected to be completed by July.

``Operators need to keep up with the latest technology developments in order to be able to reduce cost, increase efficiency and deliver new, revenue generating services. By partnering with Lucent Technologies for the upgrade of our ATM network, we are able to offer our customers innovative and reliable services,'' says Fred de Goede, general manager Transmission Services at KPN.

KPN Telecom selected Lucent for the project because Lucent was able to deliver a cost-effective total solution with benefits in both the capital and operational expense areas.

``We already have a long-term relationship with KPN. This agreement with KPN underlines our commitment to deliver high-quality communication solutions to the leading operators in the world,'' said Nicolaas Rauwenhoff, Netherlands and Nordics vice-president at Lucent Technologies.

Under the agreement, Lucent will extend the current ATM network with the supply of additional GX-550(tm)systems and circuit cards supporting a greater number of connections for data services, and upgrade the multiservice switch operating software (MSOX(tm)).

There was a consensus last week that NT would go to junk. LU has already addressed that battle and has restructured to address it.

I believe it was almost a year ago April when all the talk was being raised.

NT faces a tough road ahead IMO.

Sabre!
