It is a good question. I think it's just convention among auditors to show the numbers that way. The thinking is that the balance sheet is a snapshot in time, where as the income and cash flows statements are cumulative representations that feed into your balance sheet snapshot. But it does make it so that us investors have to do additional work. Ugh.
