China Communication Systems Taps Airspan Networks; Qingdao Project Is One Of The First 3.5 GHz Wireless Access License Rollouts In China
Business Wire - March 12, 2002 13:16
SUNRISE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 12, 2002--Airspan Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: AIRN), through its partner, Golden Cellular Communications Co., Ltd. of China, has been selected by China Communication Systems (CCS) for deployment of a wireless DSL network in 18 sectors of the major Chinese port city of Qingdao.

CCS is one of only two companies recently awarded a 3.5Ghz license by the China Ministry of Information Industry (MII) to provide broadband, fixed-wireless services in five initial cities including Qingdao. They awarded the contract to Airspan's long-time China partner -- Golden Cellular. GCC has placed related equipment orders with Airspan.

The MII is in the process of awarding additional 3.5 GHz spectrum licenses in 32 cities and by year's end plans to complete the nationwide allocation of 3.5GHz spectrum, which includes more than 350 cities. CCS already has been awarded additional 3.5 GHz spectrum in Nanjing, Xiamen, and Chongqing.

Airspan's wireless DSL network will have the potential of serving a population of about 7 million in a city which has experienced explosive foreign investment growth over the last five years. Today, more than $4 billion have been invested by foreign interests in Qingdao since China established its open door policy.

Airspan's China Managing Director, Jian Qiu, said the deployment in Qingdao points to the market's confidence in Airspan. "We're starting to see real network implementations with the early license winners."

Henrik Smith-Petersen, president of Airspan's Asia Pacific operations, said "China has the potential to be our most significant market in Asia this year and we're excited about how well positioned we are with the key, local players in this sector."

Golden Cellular is a large corporation founded by backbone-network enterprises and institutions under the umbrella of the MII. Golden Cellular is especially dedicated to providing solutions and services for China's telecommunications industry. Mr. Guo, chief executive officer of Golden Cellular said, "We have been Airspan's distributor in China since 1998. Winning the Qingdao project lays a sound foundation for future business expansion and mutual cooperation between our two companies."

Editor's Note: Airspan will be exhibiting its wireless DSL solution at three major tradeshows in March, including CTIA Wireless 2002 (Booth #3389) in Orlando, Florida, March 18-20; CeBIT 2002 (Hall 27, Booth G07) in Hannover, Germany, March 13-20 and TelExpo 2002 (Green Pavilion, A54) in Sao Paolo, Brazil, March 19-22.
