Moody's cuts Nortel to one notch above junk status
NEW YORK, March 12 (Reuters) - Moody's Investors Service on Tuesday cut Nortel Network Corp.'s (Toronto:NT.TO - news) (NYSE:NT - news) credit ratings to one notch above ``junk'' status, and warned it may cut them again on concern that weakness in markets affecting key Nortel customers will likely ``be deeper and more protracted than expected.''

The downgrade of the Brampton, Ontario-based telecommunications equipment provider, the world's largest, came on the same day that rival Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - news) warned its quarterly sales will fall short of estimates, and that it doesn't expect to turn a profit before next year.

Moody's cut Nortel's senior unsecured debt to ``Baa3'' from ``Baa2,'' and its short-term debt to ``Prime-3'' from ``Prime-2.'' Its ratings affect about $8.5 billion of debt. Downgrades often raise borrowing costs.

Moody's said its review will focus on Nortel's ability to accurately meet customer demands, cut costs and generate cash, its potential need to use vendor financing to spur sales, and its ability to remain in compliance with its bank agreements.

It said Nortel has ``solid liquidity'' with $3.5 billion of cash as of Dec. 31, but said a cut to junk would keep it from selling into its existing receivable financing programs.
