No. But the Euro carriers seem to be. They're avoiding it like the plague. Why?

Scared of EDGE, no??

EDGE is not that much to be scared of, just a very normal improvement of the GSM air interface,
especially where the network is well built and linearity of present RF components are used, mostly
a question of a little software.

It is kind of a natural thing, although it too needs the same linearity as CDMA needed long
time ago.

The funnny thing, for those having the urge to transmit from the park bench, is
that very little is demanded from the handset to receive an EDGE signal.

Especially when sitting on a park bench or slowly walking around, like the doctor in Cannes.

However, any WCDMA-GSM dual handset can obviously also transmit EDGE, from that park bench,
same linear RF parts needed for that transmitter.

Scary, yes??

But without WCDMA there would not be a global standard, for some to get stuck in their local
local niche cul-de-sacs.
