I spent the last 15 minutes trying to find a link to back it up, but so many of the sites I remembering visiting back then no longer exist. It looks like they disappeared at around the same time Sega did. At any rate, I remember several reviews commenting about the metal tube in the Japanese version of the Dreamcast that launched in 1998. Apparently, it was filled with coolant that circulated around the system, and was cooled by the side mounted fan. I don't know if subsequent cost-reduced versions of the Dreamcast needed this cooling option, but I never opened mine to find out.
