"How would one ever know that kindness was genuine rather than performed for a reward?" Can't really know what is in the heart of another. You can encourage the appearance of kindness and hope for the best. I can pray that I am true to my own, but an excited ego can bring about self deception too. Hope, prayer, and keep'n on keep'n on...maybe. Faith helps.
