On the other hand, why should they only report the official U.S. story? Good reporting gets information from several sources, IMHO.

Perhaps they do that because they know that the US State Dept versions are not accurate.
After listening to the many lies from Rubin and O'Shea during the attack on Yugoslavia, they have good reason to be concerned about the veracity of US press releases.
