If the transition to 90nm is delayed until well into 2004, I am quite certain that AMD can push 130nm to significantly higher clocks than they are currently projecting.

The theory is that AMD begged, borrowed and stole too much from the 0.13 bank while at 0.18 to keep competitive with Intel. Not much left in the tank, the theory goes.

Dale, Re: "If the transition to 90nm is delayed until well into 2004, I am quite certain that AMD can push 130nm to significantly higher clocks than they are currently projecting."

Probably. By using 193nm lithography, they may get gate widths down to 50nm, which is where Intel plans to be for the 90nm node. Then it will be the same thing over again, with the Intel investors claiming that AMD has eaten their future with 90nm <ggg>. Yes, I've heard this theory before, and it's quite plausible, IMHO.

I also think there is a good probability that AMD does, in fact, delay their 90nm process. I'll change my mind if AMD decides to demo 52Mb SRAM arrays in the near future, to indicate to me that they are at keeping up with Intel's progress, but I suspect that AMD is more concerned with getting their 130nm and SOI processes online, than they are with 90nm demonstrations. Then again, who knows....

You are "quite certain" ?

What makes you so "certain" ?
