Israelis launch massive attack

Israeli armour and 20,000 combat troops stormed refugee
camps in Gaza and occupied the West Bank city of Ramallah
yesterday in the largest military offensive since the invasion of
Lebanon two decades ago.

At least 31 Palestinians were killed in the operation. Seven
Israelis were killed and a further six wounded when Palestinian
gunmen opened fire on vehicles near a kibbutz close to the
previously dormant northern border with Lebanon.

The military offensive came after about 50,000 Israelis
demonstrated in Tel Aviv on Monday night demanding the
overthrow of the Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat.

Two Israeli cabinet ministers from the ultra-nationalist National
Union party resigned yesterday, saying that Ariel Sharon's
actions against the Palestinian Authority were not strong
enough. The Israeli prime minister still retains a solid
parliamentary majority.

In the heaviest battle, more than 20 tanks entered the Jabalya
refugee camp, north of Gaza City, and plunged it into darkness
when gunfire struck a transformer.

A Hamas leader, Abdel Aziz Rantisi, threatened bloody revenge.
"We have no choice but to kill the occupier, to kill him
everywhere, every village and every city," he said.

Tanks also took control of the West Bank town of Ramallah and
the adjacent Amari refugee camp, where heavy battles raged. Mr
Arafat remained inside his compound.

Troops announced over loudspeakers that all males between 15
and 45 must surrender. Local television stations urged them not
to.
