I am strictly a whale watcher from the city of Juneau. As far as I know whale meat is rich and nourishing. One whale feeds a village for a long time. I have read that a certain amount of "cooking" goes on as the carcass decomposes from the outside in, and the cooked meat is highly prized. All this is hearsay. I'm no expert. I have seen whales close up, though. Orcas and Humpbacks.
