I feel much more threatened by external terrorism than by the costs or actions of our government, right now. It's a cost/benefit analysis.

Not only is our way of life threatened, but our very existence is in danger -- at least for those who live in large urban areas vulnerable to weapons of mass destruction.

What do any of the rights and freedoms you speak of, and which I revere, mean to any of us, if we're annihilated?

You know what, you are right on in this post. I could not agree any more. Republican and Democrat, there is little difference, this government now routinely lies to the American public to which it is obligated under the Constitution to serve. There has been absolutely no accountability whatsoever concerning 9/11 and the outrageous lapses in our government, notably the FBI, CIA and INS, as there also have been no heads rolling at SEC, NASD or CFTC concerning ENE, GBLX, analyst manipulation of public opinion and the IPO-rigging scandal. (By the way, just look at where Richard Walker, recently head of SEC's enforcement division - and 95% of ex-SEC lawyers - is working, and you will see how corrupt the system is. Hint: it's one of Wall Street's most prominent investment banks.)

I see this country being controlled by a small cadre of venal, dishonest and immoral men and women, and it makes me sick at what is being done. Worse, the media are involved in this. The average citizen has almost no recourse left.
