Sanyo Develops Laser for Recording More Data on Optical Disks

Osaka, March 13 (Bloomberg) -- Sanyo Electric Co., which makes about a third of lasers used in compact discs and DVD equipment, has developed a blue-violet laser that lets users record and rewrite more data on an optical disk.

Osaka-based Sanyo plans to start sample shipments of the laser in about six months and will begin mass production in April 2003, Minoru Sawada, a senior manager at the company's microelectronics research center, said at a press briefing. Tottori Sanyo Electric Co., a Sanyo subsidiary, will handle production and sales.

The blue-violet laser enables more recording and rewriting on an optical disk because of its shorter wavelength. After Nichia Corp. began making the device a few years ago, Sony Corp. and others are also trying to develop the laser, betting that consumers will want to record more data from digital broadcasting and high-speed Internet.
