Earnings concerns, especially in the tech sector, coupled with a new round of accounting worries, pushed the Nasdaq Composite Index 1.7% lower. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, holding up better, recovered from early losses to post a modest gain.

The headlining losers: WorldCom Group (WCOM, news, msgs) and Qwest Communications International (Q, news, msgs), which face accounting probes by the SEC. Meantime, both cell-phone maker Nokia (NOK, news, msgs) and networker Lucent Technologies (LU, news, msgs) reported weak sales for the year so far, calling into question yet again the health of the giant telecom sector.
