Blue chips stabilise, techs slide

LONDON (FT Investor) - London's blue chip index came off its lows in late trade as a rally by oil stocks helped balance falls in the telecoms sector.

However, the smaller tech index continued its slide after a disappointing trading update from Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia and a sales warning from telecoms equipment maker Lucent.

The FTSE 100 [1805550, News, Chart] closed 0.1 per cent weaker at 5,252.5, while the FTSE Techmark [1859502, News, Chart] was 2.1 per cent lower at 1,222.6. See pan-European markets report

Nokia disappoints

Nokia [NOK, News, Chart, Research] [000053994, News, Chart, Research] said it would meet or exceed estimates for first-quarter earnings per share, but that first-quarter sales would be slightly lower than expected.
