CHANDLER, Ariz.--Microchip Technology Inc. today said it now expects revenues in the current fiscal quarter to be at the upper end of its previous guidance--about $145 million, or 2% higher than the prior quarter. The company had previously predicted that revenues would be in a range of 1-to-2% higher than $141.7 million in the prior quarter.

"In the last several weeks, the evidence has strengthened that the general economy, as well as the semiconductor industry, is improving," said Steve Sanghi, president and chief executive officer of Microchip in Chandler. "The inventory in the channel is the lowest we have on record. There is an increasing number of reports of lead times lengthening on selected microcontrollers and serial EEPROMs at certain competitors.

"Also, selling prices for some Serial EEPROMs in certain markets are rising from the bottom," he added.

Microchip is expecting its book-to-bill to approach unity in the current quarter. The company's distributors are also seeking improvements in orders for products, the CEO said.
