Class action lawsuits have become a racket and a serious threat to productivity.

I would agree with many of you that lawyers are no saints, and there are rampant abuses in the class action field, such as lawyers advertising for class action plaintiffs, taking outrageous fees while plaintiffs receive not nearly enough in some cases; however, if this law in its current form passes, state law as it concerns consumer protections will be well-nigh null and void. In that case, the "productivity" of criminals hell-bent on defrauding everyone in sight will certainly no longer be threatened in any measurable way.

I don't want to impose a lengthy discussion on all of you here but I did think this was an important subject to raise. This is not a Republican or Democratic proposal it seems, as it apparently has, astonishingly - or maybe not so, considering who in effect purchased the majority of seats in the House - bipartisan support, in the House. I hope the Senate has more wisdom and moral fibre.

Incidentally, I have enormous admiration for the President's leadership in the war on terror and also the tax cuts - which I don't believe went far enough - but if he supports this legislation I will be in rare disagreement with him.
