Carlisle is definitely English now, but there was a time it was part of Scotland. In fact, the heir to the Scottish throne used to be called the Prince of Cumberland, like the Prince of Wales being the heir to the English throne.

I hate to admit, but I do usually use the American version of spelling now, but I revert occasionally and I drive my wife crazy by insisting on saying aluminium, and not aluminum. She also has a problem with how I pronounce yogurt, but not enough for her to hire a divorce lawyer yet.
