In that light, the alphabet layout was a design masterpiece. I had forgotten about the key-entanglement problem, which in my case, was probably caused more by ineptness than speed.

Remember Easy-Rase (or something like that) paper on which errors could be eliminated with the flick of an eraser? And Liquid Paper for painting over errors? And Colored Liquid Paper for the carbon copies? And carbon paper? I remember a secretary telling me she was admonished by her boss for her cost-ineffectiveness in using a new marvel called the Xerox machine for creating her "carbons".

I just took a peek at my 40-year-old Remington Quiet-Riter (it's not) manual typewriter. It has fewer symbol keys but has the cent symbol as well as a key for "1/4" and "1/2". The ribbon is all black even though there is a setting for a red-and-black ribbon. Then there's the carriage, a device that has joined the buggy whip in antiquity.
