I do not think that an Administration that split the vote nearly evenly with its major opponent can be construed as out of the mainstream by any stretch of the imagination. Not that it matters too much, since the "mainstream" is an orientation, not a fount of wisdom.

Even with an issue like abortion, more than 40 percent of those polled favor banning it from the beginning, more than 50% favor many more restrictions than are typical, and more than 70% favor banning partial- birth abortion. Being pro- life, or less than enthusiastically pro- choice is not a fringe position.

The attempt to make this seem a "fringe Administration" is misguided at best, dishonest at worst........
