14:46 ET USDA says cattle tests routine: Dow Jones : Dow Jones reporting that the tests on five cattle in Kansas for foot and mouth are routine, and that there is no evidence the cattle have foot and mouth disease.

14:42 ET Foot and mouth implications : If foot and mouth was confirmed in the US (which has not happened at this point), the implications would be negative for beef producers and restaurants that sell beef (or the meat product of any hoofed animal), as the animals must be destroyed, thereby greatly reducing supply and increasing costs. It does not, however, have long-term demand implications, as unlike mad cow disease, there is no threat to humans from foot and mouth. It also has no implications for irradiation companies such as SURE or other food safety companies, as the issue is not the safety of the meat for human consumption, but the health threat to the animals themselves.
