RE:Offensive language is offensive - regardless of the motive of the speaker.

Not quite true, offensive language about white males is rarely considered offensive. Apparently, we are the cause of all problems in the world, so are fair game for insults and offensive language. Actually, even some nationalities are fair game. On Raging Bull, if you use the word "chink", it becomes ##### in the post. I pointed out to the people there that chink is an actual word that can be used not as an ethnic slur and that if they edited out chink, they also ought to edit out the word "limey", which is a derogatory word for English people. Of course, they didn't accept my suggestion. I guess I'll just have to get used to being a second class citizen of the world.

I wouldn't be shocked if "asswipe" was intended to offend.

Eeeewwww! There's that "word" again. It's disgusting. And, as I said, puerile. And I don't doubt that it was intended to offend.

Offensive language is offensive - regardless of the motive of the speaker.

You'll get no argument from me. Puerile is puerile. The distinction I was making was one of tone.

Lots of people use offensive language. Some do it simply out of habit or because they are not sufficiently articulate (or sober) to make a better choice. I don't like the language, but recognize that it comes with the territory, so I read past the language, regardless of the poster, regardless of the motivation.

I don't easily read past anger and apparent hatred, which may be demonstrated by offensive language or otherwise. I make a distinction between posters who argue issues, with our without colorful language, and those who seem to hate the people they're arguing with.

That's the distinction I make. Others may make other distinctions. That's what I had in mind by my post.
