Church suggests

Did you fall for this site? It is a well known anti-fundamentalist site. I think they make pretty good money on the T Shirts.

Heh... speaking of preservation of sacred sites, sometimes things backfire.

During the middle ages, the catholic church in Europe passed several edicts which included eradication of the pagan megaliths standing in areas such as what is now Brittany in France. I understand this was such a hot button that these edicts spanned centuries and involved systematically bringing down and burying these pagan artifacts out of sight.

The irony of this is by doing so, they might have preserved the sites better than if they'd left them exposed to the elements (or future generations seeking building materials), as recent excavations have unearthed the monuments and uncovered great amounts of archeological information.
