WASHINGTON -- U.S. retail sales rose last month, adding to evidence that the U.S. recession is over.

Retail sales rose 0.3% in February after a revised 0.3% decline in January, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday. January's performance had originally been estimated as a 0.2% decline.

The gain in retail sales, however, was less than many analysts expected. A Dow Jones Newswires-CNBC survey of economists predicted a 0.8% rise in retail sales for the month and 0.7% gain when autos are excluded.

Automobile sales rose for the first time in four months, rising 0.4%. Auto sales had fallen since a record 23.9% gain in October, a result of 0% financing promotions offered by dealers in the wake of Sept. 11. Excluding autos, overall retail sales rose 0.2% in February after a 1.2% gain in January.
