Korea earmarks W200 bil. for nanotech

South Korea will invest 203.1 billion won in nanotechnology, or NT, this year and seek a revision of related laws to accelerate NT projects, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) said yesterday.
The move is a reflection of the ministry's view that NT will be one of the key strategic technological fields for Korea in coming years.

NT is a sort of micro-science. A nanometer is one-billionth of a meter, and to get a sense of how small that is, forget about analogies to the width of a human hair or the head of a pin. It's a place where objects are only slightly larger than atoms.

NT is a rapidly developing field with immense potential; tiny devices could revolutionize computing, information storage, communications and any number of unforeseen areas.

The ministry said it will beef up research, facilities and manpower in the NT sector this year. Accordingly, the 2002 investment figure of 203.1 billion won is up 93.1 percent from 105.2 billion won last year.

Of the total, the ministry said it has set aside 160.1 billion won for research and development, 34.6 billion won for facility build-up and 8.4 billion won for engineer education programs.

The ministry said it would seek a hike in NT industrialization support funds this year. Its target is about 3 billion won for the planned construction of a national nano fab and a fusion technology center linking IT (information technology) and NT.
