Steve, Re: "Sun Unleashes World's Fastest Workstation"

They sure did. And it outperforms the competition in all of one benchmark. Check out the Spec submission, and tell me if you see anything odd.

spec.org

Edit: and after you look at that, tell me what the difference is between these two 900MHz UltraSparc III submissions.

spec.org
spec.org

The first one scores 731 on peak SpecFp, and a seemingly identical processor (minus the copper interconnects) only scores 410 on peak SpecFp. What a difference a process change can make on performance, eh?

sTeViE - re: "Sun Unleashes World's Fastest Workstation"

Gee...that was supposed to be released in October, 2000 !!

Looks like it's 18 months late !!

Hey...where are those Sun servers with MAD's AthyWipey in them?

sTeVie - re: "configured with dual 1.05 Ghz UltraSPARC III Cu processors, blisters the competition on its way to setting a new world record for floating point performance with a score of 827 "

Gee...that's only a little faster than a SINGLE ITanium running at only 800 MHz - 711 SpecFP200 for the ITanium.

I'll bet you'll be pleased with the McKinley Floating Point scores when you see them !!

Sun's 20th Anniversary Celebration Edition, configured with dual 1.05 Ghz UltraSPARC III Cu processors, blisters the competition on its way to setting a new world record for floating point performance with a score of 827 SPECfp2000.

Sorry to burst Sun's bubble but they are wrong. The FP crown belongs to IBM's Power4

specbench.org

In fact, using SPECFPbase scores (1 set of compiler options for all tests) the Sun machine loses to Intel's P4.
