Well, that would certainly be a lot more impressive, given that the Athlon is already a very fast product. Merced was a dog, so McKinley only brings performance up to a competitive level. But still - 1.5x to 2x performance represents a huge effort in redesigning around the IA-64 ISA to have gained so much on the same .18u manufacturing process. It would say a lot if McKinley can compete on a level of performance seen on current .13u CPUs, since that would suggest that the .13u version of Itanium, Madison, would be even that much more compelling when it launches next year.

Just getting McKinley to 1Ghz is a 1.36x faster than Itanic.

So I'm not impressed yet.

Elmer, I think 1.5 -> 2x is awesome. Now, I'd like to see if that's limited to a specific set of apps/benches or whether it's across the board.
