IBM is pushing the general Linux infrastructure
The IBM Unix (AIX) program was begun as an effort to disrupt a common Unix platform built around AT&T Unix and Sun Sparc processors. They succeeded in fragmenting the market into small and definitely not "shrink wrapped" markets. Dell's interest is in a common "shrink wrapped" Linux version that requires little Dell paid support. I am not sure that IBM is not somehow up to it's old tricks.
