In your zeal to defend all things bushy you did not notice that Bush's demands for secrecy are more than insistance on loyalty and more than Nixonian paranoia.

Daniels says Bush "makes certain that debate happens, and frequently in front of him, but ... once a decision's made, we move on. We don't revisit, we don't second-guess, we don't carp."

No contemplation, no reflection upon momentus decisions is allowed. Why, is this because Bush is afraid he hired a staff of nitpickers? No! It's because he doesn't want to be reminded of very limited input he uses to make a choice. Remember the 30 days of stewing over stem cells only to come up with a rationalle that ignored nearly every major consideration relevant to the issue.

In the Bush White House the past is best forgotten. Like a Papal Bull each whim is cast in concrete never to be reexamined. Bush can sleepwalk us into a nuclear confligration and his staff will just think "I knew I should have said something".

If an official receives multiple invitations, which is common, she decides which one he or she can accept. That level of involvement over who attends the annual dinner appears to be unprecedented.

And what about this kind of manipulative behavior? It defies logic, it's like a pervetered game of "Mother May I?"
