It wasn't the Childcraft set by any chance? We owned the 1949 set-- it is still intact upstairs in Ammo's room. That was the most magical gift I ever received..an entire world and all mine. I can still remember every picture, every story.
OH- I just found the whole set at e-bay
the bidding is only 26.00.... that makes me sad. It is worth so much more to me!

I remember getting into some books by Thor Heyerdahl about the Easter Islands when I was in junior high. How they were settled... Also some Jack London stories. I used to walk from school downtown to Walgreens, get a pack of M&Ms and a soda, ride the bus home and go to the basement to consume my treats and read. I still have the old leather top desk that I read at.
