re: HSCSD Status

Nobodies crying "God Send Mobiles", anymore

HSCSD enables subscribers of GSM networks to transmit and receive data at 43.2 kbps

Combined, these 38 GSM HSCSD networks currently serve nearly 108 million customers with GSM services.

Mobile operator representative body the GSM Association (GSMA) has hailed the launch of further high speed circuit switched data (HSCSD)-enabled handsets as a major boost to the 38 GSM network operators that claim to offer HSCSD services.

Following Nokia's unveiling of a new HSCSD handset here at the CeBIT trade show in Hannover Tuesday (the Nokia 6310i due to ship 2Q 2002), GSMA chief executive Rob Conway praised Nokia's support for the data standard, now deployed mostly by European mobile carriers.

HSCSD "enables subscribers of GSM networks to transmit and receive data at rates of up to 4 times the rate of transmission on GSM's second generation platform," said Conway. "This feature that enables networks to test existing new applications that demand high data rates over the existing infrastructure," he added.

The technology, which can offer speeds to the handset of up to 43.2 kilobits per second, is part of the GSM data evolution 'family' that can be implemented on a GSM network with a software upgrade without the need for new network elements or any change to network design. The main hold-up for such services has been the lack of available handsets.

The operators that have upgraded their GSM networks for HSCSD are:

Europe:

Connect, Austria KPN Orange, Belgium

Note the external antenna (confirmed in the Q&A with rationale).

Is this REALLY the final design?

A little surprising to see an antenna....especially considering the fact that Motorola's A820 doesnt have one.

The size looks ok....tough to tell anything else.
