Through the peace process, Israel so tried to protect itself, it ended up emasculating the new Palestinian state enough so that it couldn't function and succeed. The strength that Israel has allowed the PLO has been used against it. I still contend if Israel wants out of this mess, it needs to commit the resources to help Palestine become a success economically. I hope that this is not necessary to end the violence because Israel won't do that why the violence continues. If your talkingabout money Israel really can't help. They depend on aid from the US, so if Israel aided the Palestinains it would really be US aid. Arafat gets a lot of money from European countries and from Saudi, but I think a lot of it winds up lining his pockets or going to his cronies or to buy weapons to use against Israel. I am sure they don't want to hear that argument but I think its the only one that will succeed. Working people don't have time to riot and commit terrorist acts. Besides, they are committed to the status quo. Foreign aid isn't very good at creating jobs. Maybe it will give the PA some money to hire some people but it doesn't really develop the economy. If used wisely it can stave off disaster long enough to build up the economy and even be used to build needed infrastructure. But I'm not so sure the PA will use it very wisely. What the local economy really needs is investment but it wont get much until their is peace or at least a lasting cease fire. NBC News is reporting tonite that there were Israelis demonstrating today against Israel's hard line. At about the same time there was another demonstration, about twice as large calling for a harder line (they wanted things like expelling the Palestinians from the West Bank) It didn't get reported much in the US for some reason. There is links and posted articles about it on the Foreign Affairs Discussion Group thread, but its a big thread and I don't currently have a link to give you. Tim

I still contend if Israel wants out of this mess, it needs to commit the resources to help Palestine become a success economically. Great idea. Just pay the terrorists to stop them from killing innocents.

Funny Ted, you don't even mention the group with the most money and similar culture that should really help the Palestinians. How about the other Muslim nations that surround Israel. How about a couple of "oil producing" Arab nations supporting Palestinians with more than just rockets and machine guns. Just imagine if they could "all just get along" !! The thing is Ted, these nations will not help and only want to see Israel destroyed. Make It So, Yousef
