Quite astute, only comment I would make is that '87 Japan was still riding high and the sovereign rating was pretty solid. Problem now is the government is running out of options & money. How many multiples of GDP is the limit to government borrowing?

On topic, you are probably right, that even without the Japanese as a source of capital it would not make much difference to the bios in general. the marginal fellow, however...
