Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) today said it increased its worldwide market share from 18 percent in 2000 to 22 percent in 2001 for Windows-based desktop shipments. AMD cited research company Gartner Dataquest as the source for the figures.

AMD said it posted gains in several U.S. commercial desktop market segments. From the fourth quarter of 2000 to the fourth quarter of 2001, the Sunnyvale, Calif., company said market share increased in the small business desktop market to 37 percent from 20 percent and that in the medium business desktop market, its market share rose to 28 percent from 11 percent. Growth in the U.S. desktop government sector doubled to 32 percent and desktop education market share grew to 17 percent from 12 percent.

"2001 marked a banner year for the AMD Athlon family allowing us to drive gains in the PC market," said Ed Ellett, AMD’s VP of marketing, in a statement. "It is especially significant that we were able to increase market share within a challenging business climate. AMD’s momentum continues into 2002 with our recent demonstration of our next generation processor, codenamed Hammer. We expect to begin shipping the first version of the Hammer family of processors at the end of 2002."

Looking at other regions of the world, AMD said its processor-based desktop PCs had 42 percent market share of the Japanese home desktop market in 2001. AMD reported similar results for Western Europe, with 41 percent market share, and 28 percent market share in Eastern Europe.
