I see this issue as having a couple of big problems. 1. There is a group of people who think ALL guns should be illegal and they have been open in their desire to see this come to pass. They have been trying an incremental approach which is obvious to those who want to own guns. It is their efforts which create the distrust that prevents otherwise decent measures, that could lead to better public safety, from being put into law.
2. We have really been incapable of dealing realistically with the problem of crime in this country. It is in the hands of the criminals that guns do their damage. However, due the state of race relations in this country we have big problems dealing with career criminals effectively. The vast majority of handgun deaths occur in the innercity AND are gang related. Attempts to crack down on this crime pattern are met with cries of racism.

Like I said, don't own a gun, don't want a gun, just don't want "government" telling good honest citizens who do, they can't.
