Sun says new UltraSparc III-based workstation beats systems from HP, IBM and SGI Semiconductor Business News (03/14/02 14:36 p.m. EST) siliconstrategies.com SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Sun Microsystems Inc. here today announced what the company calls the world's fastest workstation, based on its new, 64-bit UltraSparc III processor line. The Sun Blade 2000 workstation features the new copper-based, 1.05-GHz UltraSparc III CU processor, which is said to be faster than competitive RISC-based systems from Hewlett-Packard Co., IBM Corp., and Silicon Graphics Inc. Sun claims the Sun Blade 2000 is twice as fast as IBM's Intellistation POWER 265 workstation, 425% faster than HP's J6700 system, and 132% faster than SGI's Octane2 computer. Sun originally announced the 1.05-GHz UltraSparc III CU chip last fall. Previously, its fastest workstation was based on a 900-MHz version of the chip. Sun's machine is geared for several applications, such as electronic design automation (EDA), mechanical computer-aided engineering/design (MCAE/MCAD), and others. When combined with the new Sun XVR-1000 high-performance 3D graphics accelerator and 24-inch flat-panel monitor, the Sun Blade 2000 workstation enables a new price/performance point in computing and imaging.
