Has anyone come up with the reasons behind the recent price strength yet?

News from CeBit? New Boards? Legal resolutions? Still waiting for the reason the buy volume has been building.

He might have gotten suspended. I know that SI contacted him about calling some people morons.

" At CeBit today, Sun has introduced its next-generation 3D graphics solution, the XVR-1000 3D accelerator. The new board has a maximum geometry performance of 19.1M triangles/second and a peak fillrate of 163M pixels/second ...The MAJC-5200 processor also features an integrated 800 MHz 16-bit DRDRAM memory interface, providing up to 1.6 GB/s. The XVR-1000 has 32 MB of PC800 DRDRAM onboard, for use as "graphics processor instruction and temporary storage memory." The processor is produced on an 0.22µ process and has a 624-pin package."

So the Majc finally made it to production. Let see what happens when a graphics chip is late to ship.

Hmmm. .22 u process, that is at least two generations behind current silicon.

Now compare the performance to nVidia's GeForce4 Ti 4600:

Majc nVidia
Vertices/second 19.1 M 136 M
Fill Rate 163 M 4800 M
Mem BW 1.6 GB/s 10.4 GB/s
Memory 32 MB 128 MB

So, the Majc is at least 5 times slower than a shipping product. Why is Sun bothering to produce this part?

And it should be obvious DDR provides much faster bandwidth.

DRDRAM is dead, dead, dead.
