8:03am 03/15/02 NYS Pension Fund against HP, CPQ merger (HWP, CPQ) By Steve Gelsi New York State Comptroller H. Carl McCall said Friday in an interview on CNBC that the state's pension fund will vote against the proposed merger between Hewlett-Packard (HWP) and Compaq (CPQ) . The fund holds about 6 million shares each of the two computer giants. McCall said he doesn't think the move will make Hewlett-Packard stronger. He added that Compaq is not a 'promising company.' His comments come on the eve of a shareholder vote Tuesday after a widely reported proxy battle over the deal. Shares of Hewlett-Packard fell 71 cents to $19.40 on Thursday. Compaq gave up 30 cents to $10.70.
